Yes, the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) has an age limit, and it depends on the level: you must be under 25 for a bachelor's, under 35 for a master's and under 40 for a PhD when you apply. The same limits appear on HEC's page for the Type A route and on Chinese university pages for the Type B route.
We read both on 30 October 2026. HEC's page still describes the 2026-27 round, and the 2027-28 call had not been announced, so check the new call when it comes out.
What HEC says for the Type A route
HEC nominates Pakistani candidates for CSC Type A (the bilateral route). Its eligibility page sets these limits, each counted "at the time of application":
| Level | Education you need | Age limit |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's | Intermediate, A level or FA/FSc (12 years) | Under 25 |
| Master's | Bachelor's degree (16 years) | Under 35 |
| PhD | Master's or MPhil | Under 40 |
HEC doesn't give a fixed cut-off date, only "the time of application". If your birthday falls close to the deadline, ask HEC before you apply rather than guessing. The same page says dual nationals can't apply, and that you can't apply with a degree that is still incomplete on the closing date.
Does Type B have the same age limit?
Yes, on the pages we read. Under Type B you apply straight to a Chinese university that has CSC places, and HEC is not involved. China University of Geosciences sets out the CSC rules on its Chinese Government Scholarship page: applicants must be under 25 for an undergraduate programme, under 35 for a master's and under 40 for a doctorate. The same page gives two more levels for short programmes: under 45 for a general scholar and under 50 for a senior scholar. Each university can add its own rules, so read the page of the university you choose.
Is there any way around the age limit?
None of the pages we read mentions an exception. So if you are over the limit for your level, the CSC is not open to you at that level. Never change a date of birth or a document to fit; that is fraud, and it can cost you the scholarship and a visa.
If you are past the CSC limit, some other routes have different rules. For example, Schwarzman Scholars, the fully funded one-year master's at Tsinghua University in Beijing, has its own age rule: its admissions page says candidates must be at least 18 but not yet 29 on 1 August of the year they enrol. For the Class of 2028-29, applications open in April 2027 and close in September 2027. Other awards in China, such as provincial and university scholarships, set their own rules on their own pages.
What else does the CSC ask for?
The age limit is only one rule. On the same pages:
- Tests for the HEC route. For 2026-27, HEC asked for at least 50 out of 100 in USAT (bachelor's, scores from 6 January 2025) or HAT (master's and PhD, scores from 6 January 2024), and said it would not consider applications below that. Our HAT test article explains the scores HEC asks for on each scholarship.
- The CSCA test for bachelor's. HEC says the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) is mandatory for all undergraduate CSC applicants, through Type A or Type B. For September 2026 entry, HEC asked applicants to sit it on 21 December 2025.
- Language. China University of Geosciences says Chinese-taught master's and PhD programmes need HSK Level 4, while programmes taught in English follow each university's own language rules.
- Health. HEC asks for applicants in good health, and China University of Geosciences asks for good physical and mental health.
Our Chinese Government Scholarship page lists the documents, and our Study in China guide covers both routes and the X1 visa.
When does the 2027-28 call open?
HEC's CSC page still showed the 2026-27 round on 30 October 2026: 75 seats (35 bachelor's, 25 master's and 15 PhD), closing on 5 January 2026 at 4:00 pm Pakistan time. The 2027-28 call was not up yet, and HEC had not said when it would open, so watch HEC's page. Our deadlines page will show it once the date is official.
Next steps
Work out your age on the likely closing date for your level. If you fit, take the HAT or USAT early so your score is valid, and for a master's or PhD contact a supervisor first using our email to a professor for the CSC scholarship. Applying for the CSC is free on the HEC and CSC portals, so never pay an agent who promises a seat. Confirm every rule on the official HEC and university pages before you apply, because they can change each round.
