How to apply
DAAD Scholarship Age Limit: Is There One?
DAAD sets no age limit for EPOS or doctoral scholarships, but your last degree should normally be no more than six years old. What that means for Pakistani applicants.

No, the DAAD scholarships most Pakistani students apply for have no age limit. What they have instead is a time limit on your degree: DAAD says your most recent degree should normally be no more than six years old when you apply, so the real question is when you graduated, not how old you are.
That rule is easy to miss, and it catches mid-career applicants every year. Here is what DAAD's own scholarship database said when we read it on 31 October 2026.
What DAAD's pages say
DAAD publishes the rules for each programme in its scholarship database. The two entries we read today give the same picture:
| DAAD programme | Age limit | Degree rule | Work experience | Monthly payment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EPOS: Development-Related Postgraduate Courses (master's and some PhDs) | None stated | Degrees "should normally not be more than six years old" | At least two years of related work after the bachelor's, at the time of application | €992 for graduates; €1,400 for doctoral candidates from February 2026 |
| Research Grants: Doctoral Programmes in Germany | None stated | Most recent degree "obtained no more than six years ago", as a rule, before the deadline | Not stated on the entry | €1,400 |
So neither page mentions age at all. Both use the six-year rule, and the doctoral entry words it as a rule of thumb ("as a rule"), not an absolute bar.
How the six-year rule works
The rule counts from your most recent university degree to the application deadline. A few examples of how it reads for Pakistani applicants:
- BS in 2021, applying in 2026 for an EPOS master's. Your bachelor's is five years old, so you are inside the six-year window, and you also have the time to build the two years of work experience EPOS asks for.
- BS in 2016, MS in 2022, applying for a doctoral grant in 2026. Your most recent degree is the MS, four years old, so the six-year rule is met even though your bachelor's is ten years old.
- BS in 2017 and nothing since, applying for EPOS in 2026. Your degree is nine years old, outside the normal window. The word "normally" means DAAD and the course may look at your case, but you should not count on an exception.
DAAD's EPOS rule and the two-year work experience rule pull in opposite directions, so the sweet spot for most EPOS applicants is between two and six years after the bachelor's.
Is there an age limit for DAAD for master's?
Not for EPOS, the main DAAD master's route for Pakistanis. The EPOS entry sets no age limit. It does ask for a degree normally no more than six years old and at least two years of related work after the bachelor's, and each EPOS course sets its own admission rules on top. Our DAAD EPOS page has the eligibility and documents, and our Germany scholarships guide explains how EPOS works alongside the other German options.
Other DAAD master's schemes for Pakistan, such as the Helmut-Schmidt-Programme for public policy and the study scholarships for art, design, music and architecture, appear on DAAD Pakistan's programme list. We could not read their full calls today, so check each one's database entry before you rely on the rule above.
Is there an age limit for a DAAD PhD?
No age limit appears in the doctoral entry either. The rule that matters is the six years since your last degree, usually your MS or MPhil. You also need a supervisor in Germany. Our sample email to a professor for a PhD in Germany and the general email to a potential supervisor show how to make the first contact.
Is a DAAD scholarship hard to get?
Yes. DAAD selects on academic record, the quality of your plan and, for EPOS, how your work connects to development in Pakistan. DAAD doesn't publish acceptance rates for Pakistani applicants on the pages we read, so we can't give one. What you control is a clear motivation letter, strong references and meeting every formal rule, including the six-year one. Our motivation letter guide and request for a recommendation email help with those.
What about other scholarships?
If your degree is older than six years, other funders may suit you better. The Erasmus Mundus scholarship has no age limit and no rule on how old your degree is, and our Chevening vs Commonwealth comparison covers two UK options that welcome experienced professionals. Our eligibility checker shows which scholarships fit your degree and experience.
Your next step
Work out how many years will have passed between your most recent degree and the deadline of the DAAD programme you want, then open that programme's entry in the DAAD scholarship database and read its rules in full. Applying for DAAD scholarships is free through DAAD's own portal; never pay an agent who offers to "process" a DAAD application. DAAD's database and its calls are the final word on every rule, so confirm them before you apply.
