Erasmus Mundus and Chevening both fund a master's in full, but they suit different people. Chevening is a one-year UK master's for professionals with at least two years of work experience, and it expects you to come home afterwards. Erasmus Mundus is a one- or two-year master's across at least two European countries, and you can apply in the final year of your bachelor's with no work experience at all.
Timing settles the question for many Pakistani applicants this winter. The Chevening round for 2027-28 has closed, while most Erasmus Mundus programmes for 2027 close between November and February. We checked the rules below on the official Erasmus+ and Chevening pages on 21 October 2026.
The two side by side
Who fits Erasmus Mundus better
The Erasmus+ page for students says you need a bachelor's degree, or must be in the last year of one and graduate before the master's begins. Students from anywhere in the world can apply. That makes Erasmus Mundus the stronger option if:
- You are a final-year student or a fresh graduate. There is no work experience rule in the scheme itself. Some programmes do weigh experience in selection, so read each one's criteria.
- You want to see more than one country. The Erasmus+ Programme Guide says every student must spend at least two study periods in two different countries, at least one in an EU member state or associated country.
- You want a longer master's. Programmes run for 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits, so many last two years rather than one.
- You prefer to apply to several programmes. You apply to each consortium separately, so you can try more than one.
Two rules from the Programme Guide matter for Pakistanis. No more than 10% of a programme's scholarships can go to students of one nationality, so you compete for a limited number of places with other Pakistanis. And if you have already had an Erasmus Mundus master's scholarship, you cannot get another.
The scholarship pays €1,400 a month multiplied by the length of the programme, to cover travel, visa, installation and living costs, and full scholarships also cover the programme's participation costs. Our article on Erasmus Mundus vs Erasmus+ explains how this differs from a semester exchange.
Who fits Chevening better
Chevening's eligibility rules ask for at least two years' work experience after your undergraduate degree, equal to 2,800 hours. Full-time, part-time, voluntary work and paid or unpaid internships all count. Chevening suits you if:
- You have been working for two years or more and can show leadership in your job, business or community work.
- You want a one-year UK master's and are ready to come back. You must commit to returning to Pakistan for at least two years after the award.
- You want a single, well-known UK award rather than several separate applications.
You apply to three eligible UK courses and must hold an unconditional offer from at least one by the deadline. For the current round that was 8 July 2027. Holding a master's already does not stop you applying for a second one in the UK. But you are not eligible if you have already studied in the UK on a UK government-funded scholarship.
If you are weighing Chevening against the other big UK scheme, our Chevening vs Commonwealth comparison covers that choice.
Where each round stands right now
Chevening 2027-28 is closed. The Chevening Pakistan page says so. Its application timeline shows applications usually open in August and close in October. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed in March and April 2027, and results come from mid-June. If you missed it, the next round to aim for is 2028-29, opening around August 2027.
Erasmus Mundus 2027 is open for many programmes. Each consortium sets its own deadline. Two examples confirmed on the programmes' own sites today:
- NOHA (international humanitarian action): Erasmus Mundus scholarship applications close on 15 December 2026, and only candidates who have graduated before that date can apply for the scholarship.
- MESPOM (environmental sciences, policy and management): financial aid applications close on 7 January 2027.
Notice that NOHA wants your degree finished before its deadline, even though the general rule allows final-year students. Always read the specific programme's rules. Our Erasmus Mundus page lists the programmes we track with their deadlines.
Can you apply for both?
Neither scheme's rules that we checked stops you applying to both, and the eligibility windows often separate them anyway: Erasmus Mundus is open to you now as a final-year student or fresh graduate, while Chevening only opens once you have two years of work after your degree. Chevening's rules say a master's you already hold does not stop you, but anyone who has studied in the UK on a UK government-funded scholarship is not eligible. Check the rules of the round you apply to, as they can change. Neither award covers a spouse or children, so plan family costs separately with our cost calculator.
Paperwork for Pakistani applicants
Both schemes ask for your degree and transcripts, and each Erasmus Mundus consortium sets its own document rules. Start your HEC attestation early in case you need it; our HEC attestation guide explains the steps. Erasmus Mundus programmes usually ask for a motivation letter, and our master's motivation letter sample shows the structure. For Chevening, our Chevening essay samples show the kind of evidence the essays need.
You apply yourself: Erasmus Mundus applications go to each consortium's own portal, and Chevening applications to Chevening's own online system. You never need to pay an agent for either. Our guide to avoiding scholarship scams lists the warning signs.
Your next step
If you have fewer than two years of work experience, put your time into Erasmus Mundus now: shortlist three to five programmes and note their deadlines. If you have the work experience and want the UK, mark August 2027 for Chevening. Our eligibility tool and deadlines calendar help you check what else you can apply to this winter. Always confirm the rules on the official Erasmus+ and Chevening pages before you apply.
