The biggest change for a Pakistani student in the UK is not the weather. It is how few hours you spend in class. In Pakistan a full semester is 15 to 18 credit hours, which is about 15 to 18 hours of teaching a week. A UK university may timetable 10 to 15 hours a week for a humanities or social science degree, and expects you to spend the rest of a roughly 40-hour week reading and working on your own. Halls are different too: a single room, a shared kitchen where you cook for yourself, and no warden signing you in and out.
This guide sets UK halls, timetables, teaching, attendance and marking next to what students know from Pakistani universities, for bachelor's, master's and PhD. We read every rule on 2 November 2026 on HEC, QAA and UK and Pakistani university pages. Each university sets its own rules, so your own university's handbook is always the final word.
For booking a room, rents, deposits and England's renting law, see our separate UK accommodation guide. This page is about daily life once you are there.
Halls in the UK and hostels in Pakistan
At many Pakistani universities, hostel life means a shared room, a mess with set meal times, a warden, and set times to be back. IBA's girls hostel rules, for example, ask residents to sign out when they leave and be back by 11:30 pm, say that more students may be put in a room when space is short, and discourage overnight stays outside without written permission from parents (IBA, undated PDF).
UK university halls work differently. The University of Manchester's page for international students is a typical example (Manchester):
- Every room is a single room. You choose a shared bathroom or an en-suite one.
- Catered or self-catered. Most UK students live self-catered: a shared kitchen with a few flatmates, and you buy and cook your own food. Catered halls serve meals, and Manchester says it asks catered residents about their diet in advance and meets needs including halal.
- Security, not supervision. Manchester lists 24-hour security and swipe-card entry, and a ResLife team living on site to offer help. The page describes no curfew or signing in and out. You are treated as an adult, which also means nobody in halls checks whether you have eaten or slept.
- A term-time contract. Manchester's 2025-26 prices were for a 40 to 42 week letting period, so the room is not yours all year.
Manchester's 2025-26 starting prices show the cost of having meals made for you: from £119 a week for a self-catered room with shared facilities (about Rs 44 thousand), and from £184 a week for a catered room with shared facilities (about Rs 68 thousand). Rupee figures use £1 = Rs 370, the mid-market rate on Wise on 2 November 2026 (Rs 370.5); banks in Pakistan sell pounds for more. For 2026-27 prices and a full monthly budget, see our UK cost of living in PKR guide.
What this means in practice: if you have never cooked, learn a few simple meals before you leave. Shared kitchens also mean sharing fridge space and cleaning with flatmates from other countries, which is new for many students used to a mess.
How many hours of class? UK timetables vs Pakistan
| Pakistan (HEC rules) | UK (England) | |
|---|---|---|
| How a course is counted | Credit hours. HEC's Graduate Education Policy 2023 says one credit hour is one hour of teacher contact a week | Credits. QAA says one credit is about 10 hours of total learning, in class and on your own |
| Normal full-time load | 15 to 18 credit hours a semester (HEC Undergraduate Education Policy) | 120 credits a year, about 1,200 hours of learning |
| Bachelor's | At least 120 credit hours, including a 6 to 8 week internship and a capstone project | At least 360 credits, usually three years in England |
| Master's | 30 credit hours of coursework, or 24 plus at least 6 for a thesis | At least 180 credits, usually one year full time |
Sources: HEC's Undergraduate Education Policy and Graduate Education Policy 2023, both in force from Fall 2023, and QAA's Higher Education Credit Framework for England (second edition, May 2021). Scotland has its own framework, and many Scottish bachelor's degrees take four years.
The key difference: a Pakistani credit hour counts time in class, while a UK credit counts all your learning time. So the same full-time load looks very different on a timetable. Two UK universities' own figures:
- University of Edinburgh: visiting undergraduates can expect 12 to 15 contact hours a week in arts, humanities and social sciences, and 20 to 25 in science and engineering, within a working week of about 40 hours. Edinburgh warns that you may have fewer hours of direct teaching than you are used to (Edinburgh).
- University of Bath, BSc Criminology: around 10 contact hours a week in the first year, and around 25 to 30 hours of independent study (Bath).
Science, engineering and medicine have more labs and practicals, so their timetables are fuller. Your course page usually gives its own figures.
What lectures, seminars and tutorials are like
UCL's guide for international students describes the usual mix (UCL):
- Lectures of 20 to 350 students, usually an hour long.
- Seminars of 5 to 30 students, where you discuss the reading.
- Tutorials, one to one or in small groups.
- A personal tutor for every student, who can advise on study, progress and careers.
UCL says UK study is "typically more independent" and that you are expected to prepare before class, give your own view and question existing ideas. Many Pakistani students are used to classes where the teacher covers the syllabus and students note it down; in a UK seminar you are expected to have done the reading and to speak. If speaking up feels hard at first, your personal tutor is the person to talk to.
Attendance: why it matters more on a Student visa
Pakistani universities usually tie attendance to the final exam. FAST-NUCES, for example, expects full attendance, lets the head of department excuse up to 20% for genuine reasons, and bars a student who falls short from the final exam with an "FA" grade (FAST-NUCES Academic Rules Handbook 2025).
In the UK, attendance is linked to your visa as well as your studies. Your university sponsors your Student visa and must report to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) when a student stops engaging. Two examples:
- UCL says students must have at least 70% attendance across all teaching events.
- University of Leicester logs attendance by student card swipes and tracks online learning. Its policy says students who miss all campus sessions for two weeks are contacted and must meet their personal tutor, and that sponsorship is withdrawn if a student does not re-engage within 60 days of first contact, except for serious illness or injury with evidence (Leicester).
Leicester also says only your own card may be scanned. Swiping for a friend is falsifying records, and leads to a permanent written warning. Rules differ between universities, so read your own university's engagement policy in your first week.
Exams, coursework and marks
In Pakistan, semester work and the final exam often split the grade. FAST-NUCES normally counts semester work (quizzes, assignments, a midterm) as 50% and the final exam as 50%, and grades on a 4.00 scale.
UK assessment leans more on written work, and the mix depends on the course. Bath's criminology degree assesses 10% to 25% by exams and 75% to 90% by essays, reports and presentations, and its final degree class is based on second-year and final-year marks only (32% and 68%). UCL says marks are usually given out of 100. Don't expect UK marks to look like Pakistani percentages: ask your department what each band means before you compare.
UCL also warns that using other people's work or ideas without acknowledging them can be penalised as academic misconduct. Learn your university's referencing style early, and read its rules on group work and on AI tools, which differ between universities and courses.
Master's: one year, and a busy summer
A UK taught master's is short and intense. The University of York says a full-time MA or MSc takes one year and is 180 credits, with taught modules for the first six to eight months and up to six months for a dissertation, normally 15,000 to 20,000 words (York). Brunel says the dissertation is usually written over the summer after the second period of study (Brunel).
Compared with a two-year MS in Pakistan, that leaves little time to settle in. Assignments often fall due within weeks of arrival, and the summer is not a holiday. This is also why the halls contract matters: a 40 to 42 week contract may end before the dissertation does.
PhD: research from day one
In Pakistan, HEC's Graduate Education Policy 2023 asks PhD students to complete 18 credit hours of coursework (if they come from the same discipline) and pass a comprehensive exam, with one retake allowed, before moving on.
UK PhDs are mostly research from the start. The University of Sheffield's arts and humanities doctoral school, for example, aims for completion in three years, with regular meetings with your supervisor, formal progress reviews every six months, a confirmation review at about 12 months, and a training plan you agree in the first year; the page sets no comprehensive exam. The PhD ends with a viva, an oral exam on your thesis (Sheffield). Your relationship with your supervisor matters more than anything else, which is why the first email counts: see our sample email to a potential supervisor and our guide to funded PhDs and contacting professors.
Your next step
Before you leave, read three pages on your own university's website: the course page (for contact hours and assessment), the accommodation page (for catered or self-catered and the contract length), and the attendance or engagement policy for Student visa holders. Then use our visa and pre-departure checklist and our first week in the UK checklist. The figures here come from a few universities and change each year, so always confirm them on your own university's pages.
