Scholarships for Civil Engineers from Pakistan: Master's and PhD

If you hold a BS or BE in Civil Engineering from a Pakistani university, the strongest funded routes abroad are specialist master's degrees in structures, fire safety, water and infrastructure risk, most of them Erasmus Mundus joint master's in Europe that pay fees and a monthly allowance. Many graduates first work as site or design engineers for a year or two, which helps both the application and the choice of specialism. A PhD usually follows a research master's, or comes straight after the BE at places such as KAUST.

Below are the programmes that name civil engineering in their entry rules, with the dates we checked on their official pages on 19 October 2026.

What civil engineering graduates in Pakistan usually do next

Most graduates start on one of four paths:

• Construction and site work with contractors on buildings, roads, bridges and dams.
• Design and consultancy, where structural, geotechnical and water engineers prepare drawings, calculations and reports.
• Public sector roles in works, irrigation, highways and water departments, usually through competitive recruitment.
• Further study, either an MS in Pakistan or a funded master's abroad, often in the specialism they enjoyed most in their final year project.

The common master's directions are structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources and hydraulics, transportation, construction management, and newer areas such as fire safety, infrastructure risk and sustainable materials. Pakistan's exposure to floods and earthquakes makes water and structural safety a natural story for a scholarship essay, as long as it is your own story.

Funded programmes that accept civil engineers

All Erasmus Mundus programmes below are joint degrees: you study in two or more European countries and apply directly to the consortium, not through HEC. Browse all of them on our Erasmus Mundus page or the engineering subject page.

We could not open the HEC page on 19 October 2026, so we have left out its dates and rules here. Our HEC Overseas page has the details we last checked, and HEC's own site is the final word.

IMFSE: fire safety engineering at Lund, Ghent and Edinburgh

IMFSE is the best-known route for civil engineers who want to specialise. It is coordinated by Ghent University, and its full partners are Ghent, the University of Edinburgh, Lund University and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, with students changing location between semesters.

Points from the official pages, checked today:

• Who can apply. A bachelor's degree of at least three years or 180 ECTS. Civil engineering is named, alongside structural, mechanical, electrical, chemical and industrial engineering, architecture and some sciences. Final-year students can apply if they graduate before the programme starts.
• English. IMFSE follows the University of Edinburgh's rules, which it lists as IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each part, among other tests. The page says plainly that studying your bachelor's in English is not enough for an exemption, so plan for a test. Our IELTS, TOEFL and Duolingo guide helps you choose.
• Deadlines. The form opens each October. Scholarship applications must be in before 1 February; later applications are self-funded only.
• Money. IMFSE's finance page (September 2026) says the Erasmus Mundus scholarship is up to EUR 1,400 a month with the tuition fee waived. It also warns that Erasmus Mundus scholarships for the next intake are not certain, because they depend on IMFSE's renewal bid to the EU agency, and that some IMFSE scholarships will be given either way. Tuition for students from outside Europe is EUR 12,000 a year without a scholarship.

Structures, materials and infrastructure risk

• NORISK is a one-year master's on the safety, risk assessment and management of bridges, buildings and other infrastructure. Its last cycle's second call closed on 15 April 2026; the 2027 call was not posted when we checked.
• MS2 gives a triple degree in mechanics of sustainable materials and structures. Centrale Nantes accepts a bachelor's in civil engineering or a comparable degree of at least three years, with English at B2 level or above. For the 2026 intake the Erasmus Mundus window ran from 1 January to 15 March 2026; expect a similar pattern but confirm on the official page.
• FRP++ covers structural design with fibre-reinforced polymer composites. It accepts civil, mechanical, industrial, materials, aeronautical or polymers engineering degrees. It asks for a 240 ECTS bachelor's, and 300 ECTS (bachelor's plus master's) for tracks that include the University of Naples. EU scholarships are only in the first call, which closes on 31 January 2027.

Water and floods

FloodRisk moves from TU Dresden to IHE Delft and then to Barcelona or Ljubljana, and starts in September 2027. Its non-European deadline is 3 January 2027, one of the earliest in this list, so start on references and your motivation letter now.

Earthquake and geotechnical engineering

We did not find a current, funded Erasmus Mundus master's dedicated only to earthquake engineering. Structural safety and risk courses such as NORISK and MS2 are the closest taught options. For earthquake or geotechnical research, the usual route is a funded PhD found by contacting a supervisor directly: see our guide to contacting professors for a funded PhD and this sample email to a potential supervisor.

Broad schemes worth a look

Civil engineers can also apply to any-subject awards. The ones that fit best are those with an engineering or development focus, such as the HEC Overseas Scholarships and research-led options like KAUST. For Germany, our Germany scholarships article covers DAAD routes. Check each scheme's own rules before you plan around it: priority fields and work experience requirements change from year to year.

Careers and pay

We have not found official salary data for civil engineers in Pakistan and abroad that we can stand behind, so we are not quoting figures. In broad terms, a specialist master's in fire safety, structures or water opens consultancy and research roles that general site experience alone may not, both in Pakistan and abroad. Work rights after study depend on the country's visa rules, so check them on the government's official site.

How to make your application stronger

• Get your documents ready early. HEC degree attestation can take time. Our HEC attestation guide walks you through it.
• Show a clear link between your final year project or work experience and the programme. "I worked on a flood embankment and want to model failure risk" is stronger than general interest.
• Ask referees early. Joint master's often close in January, and lecturers are busy at semester end.
• Apply to more than one programme that fits your profile, and check each consortium's rules on multiple applications on its own page.

Your next step

Run Find my matches to see which of these programmes fit your CGPA, English test and experience, or check a single programme with the eligibility tool. Then open the official page for each programme you choose and confirm the deadline and scholarship terms there, since consortia can change dates and funding between cycles. Nothing here guarantees a place or a scholarship, but an early, focused application gives you the best chance.
