Yes, some Australian universities let Pakistani students apply for free. On 29 October 2026 we read the official pages of eleven Australian universities. Five say they charge no application fee for bachelor's and master's applicants, and three more charge nothing for research degrees such as a PhD. Where Australian universities do charge, the fees we found were AUD 125 to 150 an application (about Rs 24 to 29 thousand), and two of them, Monash and Melbourne, say they will waive the fee in stated cases. The full list, with a filter by country and level, is on our universities with no application fee page.
That money adds up. Five applications at AUD 150 each cost AUD 750, about Rs 1.5 lakh at AUD 1 = Rs 195 (the Wise mid-market rate on 29 October 2026), before anyone has offered you a place. Choosing free universities for part of your shortlist lets the family spend that money on tests, attestation or the visa instead.
No fee and fee waiver are not the same
We keep two groups apart, because the difference matters:
- No fee. Nobody applying at that level pays, and you don't have to ask.
- Fee waiver. The university charges, but its page says it will waive the fee in stated cases. You usually have to ask or show something, and the university decides. A waiver is not the same as free.
Free for bachelor's and master's applicants
| University | City | What the official page says |
|---|---|---|
| Charles Darwin University | Darwin | "There is no application fee when you apply online." |
| University of Notre Dame Australia | Fremantle and Sydney | International applicants can apply directly with no application fee |
| University of Tasmania | Hobart and Launceston | It "does not charge an application fee" |
| University of Canberra | Canberra | No application fee for direct online applications, for any undergraduate or postgraduate course |
| Bond University | Gold Coast | Applying is free, with no application fee (Bond is a private university) |
Read the small print on each one. CDU's and Canberra's statements are about applying online and directly. The Tasmania, Canberra and Bond pages describe undergraduate and postgraduate coursework applications and don't say whether research degrees are included, so we list them for bachelor's and master's only.
You don't need an agent to apply to any of these. Each one takes applications directly on its own website, and you should never pay anyone to submit an application for you.
Free for PhD and other research degrees
Three of Australia's best-known universities charge coursework applicants but nothing for research degrees:
| University | Free for | Fee for others, as the page states |
|---|---|---|
| University of Melbourne | Research higher degree programmes | AUD 150, non-refundable, for new direct international applicants since 1 January 2025 |
| UNSW Sydney | Postgraduate research, honours year and diploma programmes, and programmes at UNSW Canberra | AUD 150 per online application, credit card only |
| Adelaide University | Research degrees, 100% online programmes and non-award programmes | AUD 150 for each undergraduate or postgraduate coursework application |
If you are applying for a funded PhD, this is good news, because a PhD application in Australia usually starts with a supervisor and a scholarship round rather than a fee. Our article on what a month in Australia costs sets the Research Training Program stipend against living costs, and our email to a potential supervisor helps with the first contact.
Where the fee can be waived
- Monash University asks international applicants for AUD 125 (about Rs 24 thousand) with proof of payment. Its page says it may waive the fee if a Monash staff member has given you a waiver code, for example at an exhibition, seminar or interview session you attended, or if you are sponsored by one of its listed sponsors.
- The University of Melbourne says coursework applicants can ask for an exemption from its AUD 150 fee with a request form and documents, if they are sponsored by a government or company, have a form signed by University staff (for example at an exhibition or interview), or are nominated by a partner institution under an approved agreement.
Both are cases the university decides. If you plan to rely on one, keep the code or the signed form and send it with your application.
Universities we checked that charge
The Australian National University says "You must pay an application fee of AUD$150 upon submission of each application you make to the University" (about Rs 29 thousand), and applications made through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) pay UAC's fees instead. Its page names no waiver. UTS says it waives its fee only for current UTS and UTS College students, and its page didn't state the amount. We list universities that charge on the no application fee page too, so you don't rely on old lists online that call them free.
Free to apply is not free to study
An application fee is the smallest cost of studying in Australia. Every public university charges international students full tuition, most ask for a deposit before they issue your Confirmation of Enrolment, and the visa rules count AUD 29,710 a year for a student's living costs (about Rs 57.9 lakh). Health cover is compulsory too. Our cost of living in Australia article puts those numbers in rupees, our cost calculator adds up your own shortlist, and our Study in Australia guide covers tuition and scholarships such as Australia Awards.
Your next step
Pick your three to five Australian universities, and for each one open the official "how to apply" or "fees" page and look for the sentence about the application fee. Note whether it is free, free only for research degrees, or waivable, and whether that applies to your level. Fee rules change each year, so check again on the day you apply: the university's own page is the final word. If an agent or a website asks you to pay to "process" a free application, don't pay.
