JASSO Student Exchange Support Program (Scholarship for Study in Japan under Agreement)

Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) · Japan

JASSO pays a monthly stipend to students who go to a Japanese university on a short exchange (8 days to one year) under an agreement between their home university and the Japanese university. Students do not apply to JASSO themselves; the Japanese host university applies and selects.

Deadline

Varies

No central deadline. Each Japanese university sets internal deadlines for its exchange intake.

What it covers

  • Monthly stipend of ¥80,000
  • Tuition depends on the exchange agreement between the two universities; confirm with your international office

Who can apply

  • Accepted by a Japanese university under a student exchange agreement with your Pakistani university
  • Citizen of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan (Pakistan qualifies)
  • Excellent academic and personal record; many universities use JASSO's GPA of at least 2.30 out of 3.00
  • Lacks sufficient funds to study in Japan without support
  • Will return to finish your degree at your home university
  • Not receiving other scholarships totalling more than ¥80,000 a month

How to apply

  1. 1Ask your international office whether your university has an exchange agreement with any Japanese university
  2. 2Apply for the exchange through your home university, which nominates you
  3. 3The Japanese host university applies to JASSO on your behalf and runs the selection
  4. 4If selected, the host university arranges your student visa or residence status

Tips from successful applicants

  • Ask your international office for a list of current Japanese partner universities, because the scholarship only works through an exchange agreement
  • Work out your GPA on JASSO's 3-point scale early, because many hosts use 2.30 as the minimum
  • ¥80,000 a month is modest for Japan, so budget for accommodation
