Most MBBS graduates in Pakistan follow one of two tracks after the house job: clinical specialist training (FCPS at home, or residency abroad), or a move into public health, research and health management. Scholarships almost always fund the second track. A fully funded master's in public health (MPH), global health, epidemiology, infectious diseases or clinical research is the realistic way for a Pakistani doctor to study abroad without paying fees, and a PhD can follow. Below are the programmes that fit, with what each pays and the next deadline, as checked on the official pages on 19 October 2026.
What MBBS graduates usually go on to
After MBBS and the house job, doctors in Pakistan commonly:
- Train as specialists through postgraduate clinical training, in Pakistan or abroad.
- Move into public health: disease control programmes, vaccination, maternal and child health, health departments and international health agencies.
- Do research: clinical trials, epidemiology and infectious disease work at universities, hospitals and research institutes.
- Manage health services: hospital management, health policy and health financing.
The postgraduate degrees that fit the non-clinical paths are an MPH, an MSc in global or international health, epidemiology or biostatistics, infectious diseases, vaccinology, biomedical research or health management. These are the subjects scholarship funders support, because they link to development goals such as stronger health systems.
Clinical residency abroad is a separate path, not a scholarship
Many doctors search for "scholarships" when they mean residency in the US or UK. These are jobs in training, not scholarships, and the steps are set by licensing bodies:
- United States: the ACGME requires international medical graduates entering accredited residency to hold ECFMG Certification. ECFMG says this needs passes in USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge, plus a clinical and communication skills requirement met through an ECFMG pathway that includes the OET Medicine test. See the ECFMG certification page.
- United Kingdom: the GMC's PLAB test (PLAB 1 and PLAB 2) is one route to registration for international graduates, and the GMC says PLAB now meets the requirements of the Medical Licensing Assessment (UKMLA). See the GMC page on PLAB and the MLA.
Exam and registration fees are your own cost on these routes. If you want funded study, the programmes below are the place to look.
Funded programmes that fit MBBS graduates
Europe: Erasmus Mundus joint master's
Erasmus Mundus programmes are two-year master's degrees taught across several countries, and the scholarship pays fees plus a monthly allowance. Several are a close fit for doctors:
- Europubhealth+ is a European MPH. It accepts a bachelor's degree from any discipline, and the scholarship covers participation fees, health and accident insurance and up to €1,400 a month. Scholarships are only given in the first round, which closes on 8 January 2027. English requirements depend on the pathway (IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each part for the Dublin or Sheffield first year).
- EMPHID focuses on public health in disasters. It accepts degrees in health and related fields and asks for English at C1 (IELTS 6.5 with 6.5 in writing). The scholarship is €1,400 a month for up to 24 months plus a full fee waiver. The website lists the application period as 1 October to 31 December 2026.
- IMIM, the International Master in Innovative Medicine, names medicine among its accepted degrees and suits doctors interested in translational and clinical research. The deadline is 4 January 2027. IMIM says it offers roughly 20 scholarships to about 25 top-ranked students and that last year's success rate was below 1.5%, so treat it as a long shot.
- LIVE is a master's in vaccinology. Its eligibility page names clinicians among the applicants it wants, alongside a background in subjects such as microbiology, physiology and immunology. The application platform is open from 18 November 2026 to 20 January 2027 for the September 2027 intake.
- IDOH+ covers infectious diseases and One Health. Its requirements list medical sciences among accepted backgrounds. Applications run in December 2026 and January 2027. Tuition is €4,500 a year, and Erasmus Mundus scholarships go to top candidates.
- HYGIEIA is about health and wellbeing across the lifespan and accepts medical sciences degrees. It offers 16 scholarships per intake (tuition plus €1,400 a month). An approved English test is required even if you studied in English.

United Kingdom
Commonwealth Master's and Commonwealth PhD scholarships are a strong match, because one of the six CSC development themes is "improving population health, health systems and capacity". Both pay full fees, airfare and a stipend of £1,712 a month (£2,000 in London). The CSC closing date is 16:00 BST on Tuesday 20 October 2026, and you must also apply through a nominator (HEC for Pakistan). If you are reading this after the deadline, plan for the next round.
Chevening funds any one-year UK master's, so an MPH, epidemiology or global health MSc qualifies. It covers fees, a living allowance and travel. The latest round has closed; watch the official page for the next opening. Our Chevening vs Commonwealth comparison explains how they differ.
Nottingham Developing Solutions pays 50% or 100% of tuition for a master's in faculties including Medicine and Health Sciences, and Pakistan is eligible. It does not say it covers living costs. The 2026/27 round has closed and 2027 dates are not yet published.
United States
Fulbright through USEFP funds master's and PhD study in all disciplines except clinical medicine. An MPH, epidemiology or health policy degree is the usual Fulbright route for doctors; confirm your exact field with USEFP. It covers tuition, textbooks, airfare, a living stipend and health insurance. The GRE General is required with at least 145 in each section. The last deadline was 1 April 2026 and the next has not been announced.
Germany
DAAD's EPOS list for 2027/28 includes the MSc International Health at Charité Berlin, the MSc International Health at Heidelberg and the MSc Global Health at Bonn. DAAD's list sends you to each course website for deadlines and scholarship details, so check there. We could not read DAAD's main EPOS page today, so confirm the eligibility rules (including any work experience requirement) on the official site.
PhD routes
For a PhD in epidemiology, public health or biomedical research, the Commonwealth PhD and Fulbright are the main funded routes from Pakistan. Most PhD applications start with a supervisor, so use our email to a potential supervisor and the research proposal template. HEC's overseas scholarship scheme is worth watching too, but we could not read HEC's page today, so check it directly for open batches and eligible fields.
Careers and pay
We have not found official data comparing doctors' pay in Pakistan and abroad by career path, so we do not quote figures. In broad terms, a funded MPH or research master's opens roles in government health programmes, international health organisations, NGOs, universities and research groups, in Pakistan and abroad. Many government-funded scholarships (Chevening, Fulbright and HEC among them) expect you to return to Pakistan afterwards, so read the conditions before you apply.
Tips for doctors applying
- Get your degree and transcripts ready early. See the HEC attestation guide and the document checklist.
- Explain your switch from clinical work in your motivation letter: what you saw in wards or the community and what you want to change. The motivation letter guide helps.
- Book IELTS or TOEFL in time; several programmes set minimum section scores.
Your next step
Run Find my matches or the eligibility checker to see which of these programmes fit your profile, then shortlist two or three Erasmus Mundus programmes with January deadlines. Dates and rules change every year, so always confirm them on the official programme page before you apply.
