Development issue (about 200 words)
Quetta's groundwater is falling by an estimated [2 to 3] metres a year, according to [source, e.g. a PCRWR study]. More than [two-thirds] of the city's supply comes from tube wells, and in [year] I saw [12] of the [30] wells on our project dry up within a single summer. Poorer neighbourhoods on the edge of the city pay water tanker operators up to [PKR 4,000] a month, often more than a tenth of household income. The problem is not only scarcity but management: there is no metering for most connections, about [40] per cent of piped water is lost to leakage, and recharge structures are built without data on where water actually infiltrates. As a site engineer with the [Water and Sanitation Authority / contractor name], I have helped build infrastructure that treats symptoms. I want to help the city plan its water use on evidence.
Applying new skills (about 100 words)
The MSc covers hydrological modelling, integrated water resources management and water governance. On returning, I will use groundwater modelling to map where recharge structures would be most effective in the Quetta valley, and apply what I learn about demand management to pilot metering in two union councils, working with [the Water and Sanitation Authority].
Expected change (about 250 words)
Within three years of returning, I expect three changes. First, the Quetta valley will have its first publicly available recharge suitability map, shared with the Balochistan Irrigation Department, [the Water and Sanitation Authority] and NGOs that build check dams. New recharge structures can then be placed where water actually reaches the aquifer, instead of where land happens to be available. Second, a metering pilot in two union councils, covering about [3,000] connections, will give the city its first reliable data on how much water households use and how much is lost before it reaches them. Third, I will train at least [20] engineers in my department to use the model and the data, so the work does not depend on me.
The people who benefit most are households on the city's edge who now rely on tankers. If leakage in the pilot areas falls and recharge improves, more water will reach their taps and their monthly spending will drop. I have discussed this plan with [name and post] at [organisation], who has agreed in principle to support the pilot after my return.
Measurement (about 100 words)
I will track three indicators: the water table in [10] monitoring wells near new recharge sites, the share of metered connections in the pilot areas, and monthly household spending on tankers, measured through a baseline and follow-up survey of [200] households.
Career plans: during the award (about 250 words)
Beyond my coursework, I plan to base my dissertation on Quetta's groundwater data, which I will collect before I leave with permission from [the authority]. I will join the university's [water research group] seminars, and I will seek a short placement with [a UK water company or agency] to see how metering and leakage reduction are managed in practice.
Career plans: five years after the award (about 250 words)
I will return to my post at [organisation], which has confirmed in writing that it will hold my position. In my first year back, I will deliver the recharge suitability map and propose the metering pilot to senior management. Within two years, I aim to lead the organisation's planning unit, where decisions about new tube wells and pipelines are made, and to make groundwater data a required part of every new scheme. I also plan to publish my dissertation findings with a Pakistani co-author in a journal such as [journal name], so other cities facing the same problem, such as [Mastung or Pishin], can use them.
Long-term career plans (about 250 words)
In ten to fifteen years, I hope to advise the Balochistan government on water policy, either as a senior officer in the provincial water department or through a research centre at a university in Quetta. I want to help the province adopt a groundwater law with licensing for large users, which several countries with similar aquifers have done. I would also like to teach, because Balochistan needs many more engineers trained in water management, and more of them should be women.
Personal background (about 500 words)
I grew up in [area], Quetta, where my mother and sisters spent part of every summer morning queuing for water from a shared tank. I became the first woman in my family to study engineering, at [BUITEMS / UET], and graduated with a CGPA of [3.4/4.00]. Some relatives questioned whether fieldwork was suitable for a woman. My father's answer was to drive me to my first site visit himself.
At university, my final-year project tested low-cost recharge pits in [area], and it was the first time I saw data change a decision: the contractor moved two pits after we showed they would never fill. Since graduating, I have spent [three] years as a site engineer. I have supervised crews of up to [40] workers, managed budgets of about [PKR 60 million] and learned to negotiate with landowners and community elders, often as the only woman in the room.
I am applying now because my work has reached a limit. I can build what is designed, but I cannot yet answer the question that matters most: where should the next well, pipe or recharge structure go? That needs skills in modelling and water governance that are not taught in Balochistan.
Voluntary and leadership activities (about 500 words)
In [year], I started a weekend programme with [number] engineering students to repair leaking connections in [neighbourhood]. We trained [number] local plumbers, fixed [number] connections and cut the area's water losses by about [figure], measured by comparing the flow at the supply point with the readings on [10] household meters we borrowed from the authority.
The hardest part was not technical. Some households did not trust students on their rooftops, so we asked the local mosque committee to introduce us, and we recruited two plumbers from the neighbourhood itself. When funding for materials ran out, I raised [PKR 300,000] from alumni and a local hardware dealer, and I kept a public spreadsheet of every rupee spent.
I also mentor [number] female engineering students through [programme or society], helping them find internships on construction sites, where women are still rare. Three of them now work in the water sector.
