I grew up in Skardu, where I have watched the glacier above my grandfather's village shrink every summer. In [year], a glacial lake flood damaged [number] houses and the irrigation channel that fed his apricot trees. Nobody in the village had known the lake was growing. I want to study environmental science so that communities like his know about these risks before they happen.
I have already started. For my FSc biology project, I collected five years of rainfall and temperature data from the Pakistan Meteorological Department and compared it with the dates that village elders remembered as "bad flood years". The pattern was clear enough that our college principal shared my poster with [the district disaster management office].
My grades show I can manage a demanding degree: I scored [1,010/1,100] in FSc Pre-Medical, the highest in my college. What I do not have is the money. My father is a government school teacher, and his salary supports seven people.
This scholarship would let me study at [university], whose [Centre for Climate Research] works on exactly the questions I care about. After graduating, I plan to return to Gilgit-Baltistan and work with organisations such as [AKAH] on early warning systems. I am not asking for an opportunity I will keep to myself. I want to take it back to a place that needs it.
In my first year of college, I noticed that most girls from villages outside Skardu stopped coming to the library after [3 pm], because the last shared van left at [3:30]. They were missing the only time the library's computers were free.
I asked the principal whether the library could open during the lunch break instead. He agreed, on the condition that a student took responsibility for it. I made a rota of eight volunteers, two per day, who kept the attendance register, logged computer use and locked up. At first only a few students came. I put up notices in Urdu and English and asked teachers to mention it in class. By the end of the term, about [40] students were using the library at lunchtime every week, more than half of them girls from outlying villages.
The hardest moment came when two volunteers dropped out during exams and the library had to close for a week. I learned that a system that depends on a few people is fragile, so I trained four more volunteers and wrote a one-page guide for the rota.
The library still opens at lunchtime, now run by students in the year below me. To me, that is the best measure of leadership: that something continues after you have left.
In [month, year], the road between Skardu and Islamabad was closed by landslides for [three] weeks, two weeks before my MDCAT. I had planned to sit the exam in Islamabad. With mobile internet down for much of that time, I could not download practice papers or contact my academy.
At first I panicked. Then I made a plan. I borrowed past papers from two older students and photocopied them at the only working shop in our bazaar. I set myself a timed paper every morning in our cold kitchen, which was the only room with daylight during load-shedding, and marked it in the afternoon. When the road reopened, I travelled for [26] hours by bus and arrived the night before the exam.
I scored [figure], lower than I had hoped. It was a hard result to accept. But the experience showed me two things. First, I can work steadily without the usual support, which I will need at university, far from home. Second, I became more interested in why our region is so cut off when the weather turns. That question is part of why I chose environmental science over medicine.
I do not think the challenge made me special. It made me practical, and I am proud of how I handled it.
- کسی منظر یا حقیقت سے شروع کریں، "Since my childhood I have always dreamed…"
